"A compelling drama, Robbery Homicide Division draws viewers into the lives of the elite Robbery and Homicide Division of the present-day Los Angeles Police Department. The detectives in this select unit work only high-profile crime wherever it occurs in Los Angeles."
"Detective Sam Cole (Sizemore, Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down) heads the Robbery and Homicide Division's team of highly skilled detectives. Sometimes outrageous, always strategic, Cole has both a hunter's raw instinct and the intellect and wit to pursue L.A.'s most vicious and complex crimes. He has mastered the art of viewing crime through the eyes of the criminal."
"Cole's team consists of Sergeant Alfred Simms, (Henley, Providence, ER) nicknamed "Dr. Death," he is best known for his droll sense of humor and high level of skill with a shotgun; Detective Sonia Robbins, (Scott, Millennium, Brooklyn South) a Spanish-speaking detective who specializes in pathology and Detectives Richard Barstow (Cubitt, Turks, American Embassy) and Ron Lu (Chan, Spy Game, Batman and Robin) who come from L.A.'s Hispanic and Asian Gang Units. Together, Cole's unit will confront the city's highest-profile crimes and criminals in the most exciting urban landscape in America." (Universal press release)
A big critical, if not commercial, hit, Robbery Homicide Division marked Michael Mann's return to series television after more than 10 years on the big screen. Maybe he would have been better off returning to NBC. Although Friday at 10:00pm was where Miami Vice had aired, it didn't have to contend with Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Never once did RHD air against a rerun of SVU, and no doubt both shows had too much audience overlap for RHD to ever find one. Which very well might have been the intention, since CBS didn't own a piece of the action. Ratings improved dramatically when it was moved to Saturday in The Agency's time slot for a two-week experiment, and, in fact, on December 7, 2002, it topped lead-in The District and won its time slot for the first time -- while The Agency (a show CBS did own a piece of) tanked on Fridays when it aired in RHD's slot. Just when things were starting to look up, Tom Sizemore got arrested on December 11th. And Les Moonves cancelled the series the next day.
RHD was repurposed on the Universal-owned USA Network; the unaired episodes were eventually broadcast there.
