Jack Cassidy: Summary

Recent Role:
on The Feather And Father Gang
Birthday:
3-5-1927
Birthplace:
New York
Birth Name:
One of the most Tony Award-nominated actors in Broadway history, Jack Cassidy made a name for himself on stage, screen and TV with his persona of an urbane, super-confident egotist with a dramatic flair. He turned in a number of memorable performances before a tragic accident claimed his life at the height of his career.

Cassidy won a Tony in 1964 as the womanizing Kodaly in She Loves Me, and he would be nominated for three more Tonys, including one for his performance as Max Mencken in It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman! in 1966. His voice can still be heard on over 13 original Broadway cast recordings of shows.

Cassidy found great success on television, where his smarmy persona made him a perfect foil for Peter Falk's Columbo in three memorable episodes. Cassidy could also be seen on McCloud, Get Smart, Mission: Impossible and a number of popular 1960s and 1970s TV shows. He was offered the role of Ted Baxter on The Mary Tyler Moore Show but declined. He would later make a guest appearance as Ted's brother.

Cassidy had three children, Patrick, Shaun and Ryan with his second wife, actress Shirley Jones. He had his son David with his first wife.

Tragically, Cassidy's life and career were cut short when he died in a freak accident. After falling asleep while smoking, the lit cigarette caused a fire and Cassidy burned to death.
