Nastassja is the daughter of the late Klaus Kinski, a German movie star of Polish origins, and his first wife, Ruth Brigitte Tocki. She has an older sister, now the German-language actress Pola Kinski.

Nastassja's parents separated in 1968, and she rarely saw her father after that. Ruth brought her daughters up in Munich in the old West Germany, and for some years they lived in a commune. However, when Nastassja was thirteen she was cast as a dumb child in the German film Falsche Bewegung. This led to a career as an actress and model, and at the age of sixteen Nastassja began an affair with the movie director Roman Polanski, who later cast her in the title role of Tess (1979).

Speaking English, French, German, Russian and Italian, Nastassja Kinski has worked in all of them and, exceptionally, has received major awards for work in the first three.

From 1984 to 1992 she was married to the Egyptian film producer Ibrahim Moussa, and with him has a son, Aljosha (born in 1984) and a daughter, Sonja (born 1986), now a model. Between 1991 and 1997 she lived with Quincy Jones, the African-American composer and producer, and with him has a second daughter, called Kenia Julia Miambi Sara (born 1993).
