When people hear the name Clark Kent, the image that comes to mind is a grown man with glasses who turns into a cape-donning superhero at a moments notice. Rarely do people think about how he came to be a superhero. What if Clark didn't have great parents who taught him right from wrong? What if Clark had grown up as Lionel Luthor's son? Would Clark have used his powers for evil?"Smallville" gives viewers a chance to grow up with Clark Kent, see how and why he makes the decision that will affect him and those around him later in life. In addition, as an added bonus, viewers have the opportunity to understand why Lex Luthor became evil and determined to destroy the man of steel. Not only should you tune into this show, but go out and rent or buy the seasons you have missed – you won't be sorry.

Smallville has been a big hit for years, despite flagging interest in it's twilight years.
For me personally, I used to love the show, but the recent stagnant story lines are beginning to wear thin.
Getting rid of Lana was the best thing for the show this season, and even in her late season cameo she seemed unnecessary and uninteresting. Lex of course is missed, as his acting was part of the glue that's kept the show together.
Doomsday's arrival was an unexpected treat; and while I don't hold Smallville's departures from comic lore against it, I do wonder how they will reconcile Doomsday's role in the comic as Superman's killer with making contact with young Clark before he even knows how to fly.
Speaking of which, one more episode with no flying and I'm out. I mean it. Fly already!!!

I haven't watched Smallville in several years, so perhaps it's gotten better, and I'm simply basing this review upon what I remember, but herein lies the problem I have with this show: the writing is circular and not very original and the plotlines seem (at least, again, in the earlier years) to have relied on simple 'outs' for the characters. I remember in two season finales, one of the later scenes (the first time between Clark and Lana, and the second time between Clark and Chloe) were almost entirely identical--that's just lazy writing. And as far as character development was concerned, after four years, it didn't seem like any of them had grown or developed in any significant way. The way I identify strong character growth is this: if I can turn on an episode from a show I've watched regularly and know exactly what season it's from based on what the characters are like, that means the show has strong character development. I can't do that with Smallville; I can with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, one of the iconic examples of an exceptional television show. And last, not to mention, the acting is subpar at its best. But that's a whole other story
