Mary and Rhoda

Aired: Monday February 7, 2000

America's favorite best friends, Mary and Rhoda, have been seperated for many years. Mary, as we learned, did network news for ABC in New York after being fired from WJM-TV while raising a daughter, Rose. More recently, however, she spent a 4-month vacation in Italy due to grief over her recently deceased politician husband. Rhoda, on the other hand, moved to Paris and had a daughter (Meredith). She eventually divorced her husband due to his unfaithfulness. Since then, Rhoda has moved back to New York. Mary tries to reach Rhoda in Paris. Rhoda tries to reach Mary in New York. She eventually learns of Mary's apartment's location, so she goes to visit her there. As Mary steps into a taxi, Rhoda sees her, cries out "Mary! Mary!" and the 2 best friends reunite. Later, Mary & Rose visit Mary's lawyer, where they find out that Mary's husband mortgaged much of their money to finance his campaigns. Mary must now live on what little savings she has. She goes to a job interview at WNYT and meets Jonah, a 33-year-old yuppie. He isn't exactly crazy about Mary, but hires her on as segment producer. Meanwhile, Mary & Rhoda track down galleries to display Rhoda's photography (she is in need of a job too). However, she is continuously turned down. They also have to deal with the fact that both of their daughters want to drop out of college. At work, Mary is assigned to cover a story about an 18-year-old murderer. She and the bitchy co-anchor, Cecile Andrews, interview the murderer's parents. Cecile's painful questions cause the parents to cry hysterically. Later, Cecile edits the footage to expose untruthfulness. Against Jonah's command, Mary edits another version of the story. Mary's version airs, and it is very sentimental among viewers. The next day, Jonah almost fires Mary. As Mary leaves his office, he whispers, "I liked it." Mary hears it, but isn't sure if he actually said it. Elsewhere, Rose's stand-up routine flops. After discussing it with Mary, Rose tries it again with some clever new jokes, and it is well-received. Rose tells Mary that she wants to go back for school. They go back to Mary's apartment, where Rhoda & Meredith are waiting for a surprise party. It was in attempt to cheer Mary up after being fired, but since she was not fired, it becomes a celebration of Rhoda's having found a place to display her photography. They make a toast: "To New Beginnings!"

Mary Richards and the Incredible Plant Lady

Mary and Rhoda’s friendship is strained after Rhoda borrows money to set up her new plant store and then doesn’t pay Mary back.
